Isotoma fluviatilis, commonly known as Blue Star Creeper, is a low growing, spreading groundcover that creates a soft, dense carpet of greenery and delicate blooms. It’s especially effective for filling in tight spaces and creating a seamless ground plane.

The foliage is small, bright green, and finely textured, forming a tight mat that feels soft underfoot. Its low profile and dense growth make it ideal for detailed planting areas.

From spring through fall, it produces small, star-shaped blue to pale lavender flowers that appear just above the foliage. The blooms are subtle but abundant, creating a gentle wash of color across the surface.

It spreads steadily by runners, forming a uniform, carpet-like layer that can handle light foot traffic.

Isotoma fluviatilis grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well drained soil with consistent moisture. It performs best with regular watering, especially in warmer climates.

It typically stays under 2 to 4 inches tall and spreads outward to form a dense mat. It is well suited for USDA zones 6 through 9, however it is also seen thriving here in Southern California which is why we have included zone 10. The foliage is evergreen to semi evergreen depending on climate.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers may attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer resistant.

Isotoma fluviatilis fits especially well into cottage, modern, and functional garden designs, where it can be used to create soft, continuous groundcover.

It works exceptionally well between stepping stones, where it can fill gaps and create a seamless look, and it can even be used as a lawn alternative in low traffic areas due to its dense, walkable growth.

It pairs well with plants like Thymus serpyllum ‘Elfin’ to create a varied groundcover texture, Carex divulsa to introduce a slightly taller, meadow-like contrast, and Ajuga reptans ‘Chocolate Chip’ to add a darker, complementary layer.
