Asteriscus maritimus ‘Gold Coin’, commonly known as Gold Coin Daisy, is a low growing, sun-loving perennial that brings bright, cheerful color and a compact form into the landscape. It’s especially effective for adding consistent blooms in warm, dry conditions.

The foliage is soft gray green, slightly fuzzy, and forms a dense, mounded base. The muted tone helps highlight the flowers while also contributing to a cohesive, drought tolerant palette.

From spring through fall, it produces an abundance of bright yellow, daisy-like flowers that sit just above the foliage. The blooms are bold and continuous, creating a strong visual impact over a long season.

It maintains a compact, rounded habit, making it ideal for borders, containers, rock gardens, or as a low accent in mixed plantings.

Asteriscus ‘Gold Coin’ grows best in full sun and requires well drained soil. It thrives in dry conditions and performs best with minimal water once established.

It typically reaches about 8 to 12 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide, forming a tight, low mound. It is well suited for USDA zones 8 through 9, however it is also seen thriving here in Southern California which is why we have included zone 10. The foliage is evergreen.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer resistant.

Asteriscus maritimus ‘Gold Coin’ fits especially well into Mediterranean, coastal, and rock garden designs, where its bright blooms can be used to create contrast and long-lasting color.

It pairs well with plants like Lavandula stoechas ‘Otto Quast’ to contrast yellow and purple tones, Santolina chamaecyparissus to reinforce a soft, silvery palette, and Thymus serpyllum ‘Elfin’ to create a low, textural ground layer.

Expert Tip:

Place this in full sun with excellent drainage, because it performs best in dry, open conditions. Light trimming throughout the season will help maintain a compact shape and encourage continuous blooming.
