  • Arbutus unedo ‘Compacta’, commonly known as Dwarf Strawberry Tree, is a smaller, more manageable version of the classic Strawberry Tree that still brings plenty of character to the garden. It features attractive reddish brown bark that becomes more textured with age, along with dense evergreen foliage that stays deep green year round.
  • One of the standout features of this plant is its unique combination of flowers and fruit. In fall through winter, it produces clusters of small, urn shaped white to soft pink flowers, often appearing at the same time as its round, red fruit from the previous season. The fruit is edible with a mild, slightly sweet flavor and adds an extra layer of seasonal interest while also attracting birds.
  • ‘Compacta’ has a naturally rounded, shrub like form and typically stays much smaller than the standard Arbutus unedo, making it a great fit for tighter spaces, patios, or as a foundation plant. It can be grown as a large shrub or trained into a small tree depending on your preference.
  • This plant performs best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well drained soil. Once established, it is drought tolerant and well suited for Mediterranean and coastal gardens. It also shows good tolerance to wind, salt, and a variety of soil conditions, making it a dependable and low maintenance choice.
  • Arbutus unedo ‘Compacta’ typically grows 8 to 12 feet tall and wide, though it can be kept smaller with pruning. It is well suited for USDA zones 8 through 10 and handles light frost once established.
  • This plant is generally considered non toxic, though the fruit is not commonly eaten in large quantities.
  • With its evergreen structure, seasonal flowers and fruit, and manageable size, Dwarf Strawberry Tree is a versatile and attractive option for adding year round interest to the garden.
