Buddleja davidii ‘Black Knight’, commonly known as Butterfly Bush, is a fast growing, flowering shrub known for its deep color and strong pollinator appeal. It’s a great choice when you want bold blooms and consistent summer color.

The foliage is gray green with a slightly soft texture, forming an open, arching structure that gives the plant a relaxed, natural look. It fills space quickly and works well in more informal plantings.

From summer into early fall, it produces long, tapered flower spikes in rich, dark purple. The color is one of the deepest among butterfly bushes, creating a strong visual contrast against lighter plants.

It typically reaches about 6 to 10 feet tall and wide, though it can be kept smaller with pruning. It is well suited for USDA zones 5 through 9, but also does great here in zone 10 in Southern California.  The foliage is deciduous.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

It is generally deer resistant.

Expert Tip:

Place this in full sun and cut it back hard in late winter, because it blooms on new growth and responds well to a strong prune. This will help maintain a more compact shape and encourage larger, more vigorous blooms.
