Leonotis leonurus, commonly known as Lion’s Tail, is a bold, fast growing perennial shrub that brings vibrant color and strong vertical structure into the landscape. It’s especially effective for creating seasonal impact and attracting wildlife.

The foliage is medium green and slightly coarse, forming an upright, open framework. It provides a solid backdrop that allows the flowers to stand out prominently.

From late summer through fall, it produces tiered whorls of bright orange, tubular flowers that encircle the stems at intervals. These unique, globe-like clusters create a striking architectural look and are highly attractive to hummingbirds.

Its upright growth habit makes it ideal for the back of borders, as a focal point, or as a seasonal accent in mixed plantings.

Leonotis leonurus grows best in full sun and prefers well drained soil. Once established, it is drought tolerant and performs well in warm, dry conditions.

It typically reaches about 4 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide, forming a tall, airy shrub. It is well suited for USDA zones 8 through 9, however it is also seen thriving here in Southern California which is why we have included zone 10. The foliage is semi evergreen depending on climate.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees and are especially attractive to hummingbirds.

It is generally deer resistant.

Leonotis leonurus fits especially well into Mediterranean, cottage, and wildlife garden designs, where its bold blooms can be used to create vertical interest and seasonal color.

It pairs well with plants like Salvia leucantha ‘Midnight’ to extend late-season color, Muhlenbergia capillaris to add soft movement and contrast, and Echinacea purpurea to introduce a complementary flowering layer.

Expert Tip:

Place this in full sun and cut it back in late winter, because it blooms on new growth and responds well to pruning. This will help maintain a more compact form and encourage stronger flowering.
