Sphaeralcea ambigua, commonly known as Desert Globemallow, is a tough, sun loving perennial native to California, Baja and other Southwestern states under 8,000 feet elevations.. It’s one of those plants that thrives in harsh conditions but still brings a surprising amount of color to the garden.

The foliage is soft and gray green, with a slightly fuzzy texture that helps it handle heat and dry air. It forms a loose, airy shrub that doesn’t feel heavy, making it easy to blend into naturalistic or desert style plantings.

From spring into early summer, and sometimes longer, it produces a steady flush of cup shaped flowers in warm shades of orange to apricot. The blooms sit along upright stems and create a bright, cheerful display that really stands out against the muted foliage.

This plant is especially useful in low water landscapes, slopes, or open areas where other plants might struggle. It has a deep root system that helps it establish well and makes it a good choice for stabilizing soil in dry conditions.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.
