Penstemon eatonii, commonly known as Firecracker Penstemon, is a striking native perennial that brings bold color and strong vertical presence into the landscape. It’s especially valued for its early bloom season and ability to attract hummingbirds.

The foliage forms a low rosette of narrow, deep green leaves that provide a clean base. The leaves often have a slightly glossy surface and may develop reddish tones under stress or cooler conditions.

In late winter through spring, tall flower stalks rise above the foliage, carrying clusters of bright red, tubular flowers. The blooms are vivid and upright, creating a strong vertical accent and drawing in hummingbirds.

It has a naturally upright, somewhat open growth habit, making it ideal for adding height and seasonal interest to borders, slopes, or native plantings.

Penstemon eatonii grows best in full sun and requires well drained soil. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant and thrives in dry, lean conditions.

It typically reaches about 2 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide, forming a vertical, clumping plant. It is well suited for USDA zones 4 through 9, however it is also seen thriving here in Southern California which is why we have included zone 10. The foliage is semi evergreen depending on climate.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees and are especially attractive to hummingbirds.

It is generally deer resistant.

Penstemon eatonii fits especially well into native, Mediterranean, and desert garden designs, where its color and drought tolerance can be used to create seasonal impact.

It pairs well with plants like Salvia ‘Bee’s Bliss’ to create a low, spreading base, Eriogonum fasciculatum to add complementary native blooms, and Muhlenbergia rigens to introduce movement and contrast.

Expert Tip:

Place this in full sun with excellent drainage and avoid heavy watering, because it performs best in dry conditions. Removing spent flower stalks will also help keep the plant tidy and encourage a longer bloom period.
