Achillea filipendulina, commonly known as Fernleaf Yarrow, is a bold, upright perennial that brings strong structure and long-lasting color into the landscape. It has a more substantial presence than common yarrow varieties, making it a great choice for anchoring perennial plantings.

The foliage is finely cut and fern-like, with a soft gray green tone that creates a textured base. It has a slightly more robust look compared to Achillea millefolium, giving it more visual weight in the garden.

In late spring through summer, it produces large, flat topped clusters of bright golden yellow flowers held on sturdy, upright stems. The blooms maintain their color well and can also be dried for long-lasting arrangements.

It forms a clumping, upright habit that holds its shape nicely, making it useful in borders, mass plantings, or as a vertical element in mixed beds.

Achillea filipendulina grows best in full sun and requires well drained soil. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant and performs well in low water landscapes.

It typically reaches about 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, forming a strong, upright clump. It is well suited for USDA zones 3 through 9. We also see it thriving here in zone 10 in Southern California.  The foliage is deciduous to semi evergreen depending on climate.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

It is generally deer resistant.

Achillea filipendulina fits especially well into Mediterranean, cottage, and naturalistic garden designs, where its structure and color can be used to create height and seasonal interest.

It pairs well with plants like Perovskia atriplicifolia ‘Blue Spire’, Leymus, Penstemon, Sages, and Sedums.

Expert Tip:

Place this in full sun with well drained soil, because it performs best in dry, open conditions. Cutting back spent flowers will encourage additional blooms and help maintain a cleaner, more upright form.
