Ribes aureum, commonly known as Golden Currant, is a versatile native shrub that brings both seasonal beauty and habitat value to the landscape. Ribes aureum typically grows about 6 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide, forming an open, upright shrub. It is well suited for USDA zones 4 through 8 and is very cold hardy. The foliage is deciduous. Although sources show this plant up to zone 8, we see it adapting into zone 9 and even parts of zone 10 in Southern California with the right conditions.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees, and the berries are valuable for birds and other wildlife.

It is generally deer resistant, though some browsing may occur. Rabbits may occasionally nibble young plants.

Ribes aureum fits especially well into native, woodland, and cottage garden designs, where its seasonal changes and ecological benefits can really be appreciated.
