Myrtus communis ‘Compacta’, commonly known as Dwarf Myrtle, is a dense, evergreen shrub that brings refined structure, fragrance, and a classic Mediterranean feel into the landscape. It’s especially valued for its compact form and versatility in formal designs.

The foliage is small, glossy, and deep green, forming a tight, bushy habit that looks clean and polished year round. The leaves are aromatic when crushed, adding a subtle sensory element.

In late spring through summer, it produces small white flowers with prominent stamens that stand out against the dark foliage. The blooms are delicate but noticeable and are followed by small, dark berries that add seasonal interest.

It naturally maintains a compact, rounded shape, making it ideal for low hedges, borders, or clipped forms in more structured garden layouts.

Myrtus ‘Compacta’ grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well drained soil. Once established, it is drought tolerant and performs well in warm, dry conditions.

It typically reaches about 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, forming a dense, manageable shrub. It is well suited for USDA zones 8 through 9, however it is also seen thriving here in Southern California which is why we have included zone 10. The foliage is evergreen.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees, and the berries may attract birds.

It is generally deer resistant.

Myrtus communis ‘Compacta’ fits especially well into Mediterranean, formal, and courtyard garden designs, where its structure and refined foliage can be used to create clean lines and rhythm.

It pairs well with plants like Lavandula x intermedia ‘Grosso’ to reinforce a classic Mediterranean palette, Teucrium chamaedrys to create a structured low hedge, and Santolina chamaecyparissus to introduce a soft, silvery contrast.
