Gaura lindheimeri
Gaura lindheimeri, commonly known as Gaura or Whirling Butterflies, is a light, airy perennial that brings movement and a soft, natural feel into the landscape. It’s especially effective for creating a sense of flow and looseness in planting designs.
The foliage forms a low, somewhat open mound of narrow, green leaves, sometimes with subtle reddish tones. It serves as a soft base that allows the flowers to stand out.
From late spring through fall, slender stems rise above the foliage, carrying delicate white to soft pink flowers that flutter in the breeze. The blooms resemble small butterflies in motion, giving the plant its common name.
It has a loose, informal growth habit that works well in naturalistic plantings, borders, or as a filler between more structured plants.
Gaura lindheimeri grows best in full sun and prefers well drained soil. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant and performs well in warm, dry conditions.
It typically reaches about 2 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, forming a light, airy clump. It is well suited for USDA zones 5 through 10. The foliage is semi evergreen depending on climate.
This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.
The flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
It is generally deer resistant.
Gaura lindheimeri fits especially well into Mediterranean, cottage, and naturalistic garden designs, where its movement can be used to soften planting edges and connect different elements.
It pairs well with plants like Salvia ‘Mystic Spires’ to add vertical contrast and deeper color, Muhlenbergia capillaris to reinforce soft movement, and Echinacea purpurea to introduce a more structured flowering element.
Expert Tip:
Place this where it can move freely, because its airy stems create the most impact when they catch the breeze. Cutting it back lightly during the season will also help keep it from becoming too loose and encourage fresh growth.
