Cistus x purpureus, commonly known as Purple Rockrose or Orchid Rockrose, is a sun loving evergreen shrub that brings bold, seasonal color into the landscape with very little maintenance. It has a naturally relaxed, Mediterranean character that works well in drought tolerant designs.

The foliage is gray green with a slightly textured surface, forming a dense, mounded shape. It has a soft, muted tone that pairs easily with other drought tolerant plants and helps balance brighter colors.

In spring through early summer, it produces large, papery flowers that are a rich magenta pink with dark maroon blotches near the center. Each bloom only lasts a short time, but the plant produces them in abundance, creating a strong flush of color.

It grows quickly and fills space well, making it a great option for slopes, mass plantings, or as a low informal hedge. It has a more natural growth habit and generally looks best when not over-pruned.

Cistus x purpureus grows best in full sun and requires well drained soil. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant and thrives in hot, dry conditions.

It typically reaches about 3 to 5 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, forming a broad, rounded shrub. It is well suited for USDA zones 8 through 11. The foliage is evergreen.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer resistant.

Cistus x purpureus fits especially well into Mediterranean, coastal, and naturalistic garden designs, where its seasonal bloom and drought tolerance make it a reliable performer.

It pairs well with plants like Lavandula species to reinforce that classic Mediterranean palette, Salvia clevelandii ‘Winifred Gilman’ to add fragrance and complementary color, and Ceanothus ‘Yankee Point’ to create a layered, cohesive low water planting.

Expert Tip:

I like to leave this one a little on the natural side. If you prune it too hard or too often, it can lose its shape. A light trim after flowering is usually all it needs to stay full and balanced.
