Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Blue Spirs'
Perovskia atriplicifolia ‘Blue Spire’, commonly known as Russian Sage, is a drought tolerant perennial that brings both color and movement into the landscape. It has a light, airy quality that works especially well in more relaxed, naturalistic plantings.
The foliage is finely textured and silvery gray, with a soft, almost hazy look. When brushed, it releases a subtle, aromatic scent that adds another layer of interest.
In summer through fall, it produces tall, open spikes of lavender blue flowers that seem to float above the foliage. The blooms are not dense, but that’s part of the appeal. They create a soft wash of color that moves easily with the wind.
It tends to grow in a loose, upright form, which makes it a great contrast to more compact or structured plants. It’s often used to add height without adding visual weight.
Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’ grows best in full sun and requires well drained soil. Once established, it is very drought tolerant and performs best with minimal watering.
It typically reaches about 3 to 5 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide, forming an open, airy shrub. It is well suited for USDA zones 5 through 9 and is quite adaptable. The foliage is deciduous to semi evergreen depending on climate. It can also perform in milder parts of Zone 10 with proper drainage.
This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.
The flowers attract pollinators such as bees.
It is generally deer resistant and well suited for low maintenance plantings.
Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’ fits especially well into Mediterranean, cottage, and xeriscape garden designs, where its texture and color can be used to create movement and contrast.
Expert Tip:
I like using this to soften more structured plantings. Pairing it with tighter shrubs or bold forms creates a nice balance, and that airy bloom helps break up anything that feels too rigid. I’ll also cut it back once a year to keep it from getting too woody and to encourage fresh growth.
