Oscularia deltoides, commonly known as Pink Ice Plant, is a low growing succulent that brings both color and texture to the garden without much effort. Native to South Africa, it’s especially useful for covering ground in sunny, dry areas where other plants might struggle.

The foliage is made up of small, triangular leaves with a blue green tone that can take on hints of pink or purple, especially in cooler weather or under stress. It forms a dense, spreading mat that hugs the ground and helps fill in gaps nicely.

In spring, the plant really puts on a show. Bright magenta pink, daisy like flowers open during the day, creating a vivid contrast against the softer foliage. When planted in groups, the effect can be pretty striking.

It’s a great choice for rock gardens, slopes, or spilling over edges of walls and containers. It can also be used as a groundcover in low water landscapes where you want something that spreads but stays relatively controlled.

Oscularia deltoides grows best in full sun and needs well drained soil. Once established, it is very drought tolerant and thrives with minimal watering. Like most succulents, it’s important not to overwater, as excess moisture can lead to rot.

It typically stays around 4 to 8 inches tall and can spread several feet wide over time, forming a low, dense carpet. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is hardy down to around 25 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is evergreen in mild climates. 

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, making it a dependable option for low maintenance landscapes.

Oscularia deltoides fits especially well into Mediterranean, xeriscape, and coastal garden designs, where its color and spreading habit can be used to soften edges and cover ground.

With its bright flowers, low growing habit, and easy care nature, this is a great plant for adding a pop of color to sunny, dry areas.
