Senecio jacobsenii, commonly called Trailing Jade or Weeping Jade, is one of those plants that really softens a space. Native to East Africa, it has a thick, trailing habit with fleshy, overlapping leaves that create a cascading, almost draped effect.

The foliage is a soft green most of the year, but can take on rich purple or reddish tones when exposed to more sun or cooler temperatures. That color shift gives it a bit of seasonal interest without needing flowers to stand out.

It’s especially well suited for hanging over edges—think retaining walls, containers, or raised planters—where the stems can spill down naturally. Over time, it can form a dense, trailing layer that adds movement and texture.

In cooler months, mature plants may produce small, orange, daisy like flowers tucked along the stems. They’re a nice bonus and can attract pollinators such as bees.

This plant does best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well drained soil. It’s fairly drought tolerant once established, but will look fuller and healthier with occasional watering. Like most succulents, it’s important not to let it sit in overly wet conditions.

It stays relatively low, usually under a foot tall, but can trail several feet as it spreads. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is sensitive to frost, tolerating temperatures down to around 25 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is evergreen in mild climates. 

This plant has some toxicity and may cause irritation or illness if ingested, so it is best to plant with care around pets and children.

When in bloom, the flowers can attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, making it a dependable, low maintenance option.

Trailing Jade fits especially well into succulent gardens, Mediterranean plantings, and container designs, where its cascading form can be used to soften edges and add a more relaxed feel.

With its trailing habit, subtle color shifts, and easy care nature, this is a great plant for bringing a bit of flow and softness into the landscape.
