Trichostema lanatum, commonly known as Woolly Blue Curls, is one of California’s most distinctive native shrubs. Found naturally in chaparral plant communities, it thrives in hot, dry conditions and brings both texture and vibrant color to the landscape.

The foliage is narrow and gray green, covered in fine hairs that give it a soft, slightly woolly texture. When brushed, the leaves release a strong, aromatic scent, adding another sensory layer to the garden.

In late spring through early summer, the plant produces its signature flowers—deep purple blooms with long, curling stamens that extend outward like ribbons. The effect is bold and eye catching, and the flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, especially bees.

This shrub has an upright, somewhat open form and works well in naturalistic plantings, native gardens, or on slopes where good drainage is essential. It’s a great choice for adding vertical interest without creating too much density.

Trichostema lanatum grows best in full sun and requires excellent drainage. Once established, it is extremely drought tolerant and prefers little to no summer water, which makes it ideal for low water landscapes. Overwatering can shorten its lifespan.

It typically reaches about 3 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, forming a loose, upright shrub. It is well suited for USDA zones 8 through 10 and is hardy down to around 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is evergreen. 

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees and are especially valuable for supporting native insects.

It is generally deer resistant and typically avoided by rabbits once established.
