Chionanthus retusus, commonly known as Chinese Fringe Tree, is a refined, deciduous tree that brings soft texture and seasonal elegance into the landscape. It’s often used when you want a flowering tree that feels light and graceful rather than bold or heavy.

The foliage is made up of broad, deep green leaves that create a full, rounded canopy during the growing season. It has a clean, polished look that works well in both formal and naturalistic designs.

In late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of delicate, fringe-like white flowers that appear to float along the branches. The blooms have a soft, airy quality and can lightly fragrance the surrounding area, creating a subtle but memorable display.

As the season progresses, the tree maintains a calm, balanced presence, with foliage that can develop soft yellow tones in fall before dropping.

It naturally develops a rounded to slightly spreading form, often with a multi-branched structure that adds character over time. It works well as a specimen tree or as part of a layered planting.

Chionanthus retusus grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well drained soil. It benefits from consistent watering while establishing, then becomes more adaptable over time.

It typically reaches about 15 to 25 feet tall and wide, forming a broad, rounded canopy. It is well suited for USDA zones 5 through 9. It's also used frequently here in zone 10 in So Cal.  The foliage is deciduous.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer resistant.

Chionanthus retusus fits especially well into cottage, traditional, and specimen-focused garden designs, where its soft flowering display can be used as a focal point.

It pairs well with plants like Camellia japonica to extend seasonal interest with earlier blooms, Hakonechloa macra to introduce soft, flowing texture at the base, and Heuchera varieties to add layered foliage color beneath the canopy.

Expert Tip:

Place this where it can be viewed up close during bloom, because the delicate flowers are best appreciated at eye level. A slightly protected location will also help preserve the blooms and maintain a clean canopy. There's an incredible specimen of Chionanthus at the LA Arboretum I love seeing in full bloom.
