Feijoa sellowiana, commonly known as Pineapple Guava, is a versatile evergreen shrub or small tree that blends ornamental value with edible fruit. It’s a great choice when you want something that looks good year round but also gives you something back.

The foliage is a soft gray green with a slightly silvery underside, giving it a muted, almost Mediterranean look. The leaves are thick and leathery, which helps it hold up well in heat and dry conditions.

In late spring, it produces unique flowers with white petals and bright red stamens. The petals are actually edible and have a sweet, tropical flavor, adding an unexpected bonus to the plant.

By fall, it produces green, oval shaped fruit with a sweet, aromatic flavor often described as a mix of pineapple and guava. The fruit drops when ripe and can be eaten fresh or used in jams and desserts.

It naturally grows as a dense shrub but can also be trained into a small tree or used as a hedge. It’s especially useful for screening, edible gardens, or as a structural backdrop.

Feijoa sellowiana grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well drained soil. Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant and adapts well to a range of conditions.

It typically reaches about 10 to 15 feet tall and wide, though it can be kept smaller with pruning. It is well suited for USDA zones 8 through 11. The foliage is evergreen.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer resistant.

Feijoa sellowiana fits especially well into Mediterranean, edible, and screening designs, where it can serve both as a functional and ornamental plant. Sometimes sold as Acca sellowiana.

It pairs well with plants like Grevillea, Kangaroo Paw, Lavender, Lion's Tail, and Pennisetum.

Expert Tip:

I like using this as an edible hedge. If you keep it lightly trimmed, it stays dense and clean, and you still get plenty of fruit. It’s one of those plants that can do double duty without feeling like a compromise.
