- Sequoia sempervirens, commonly known as Coast Redwood, is an iconic evergreen tree known for its incredible height, rich history, and timeless presence in the landscape. Famous for being one of the tallest tree species in the world, it brings a strong vertical element and a sense of scale that few other trees can match.
- The foliage is soft and deep green, arranged in flat sprays that give the tree a full, lush appearance year round. Its bark is a warm reddish brown with a fibrous texture that adds character and visual interest, especially as the tree matures. Even at a young age, it has a stately, upright form that makes an impression.
- Coast Redwood grows quickly under the right conditions and is best suited for larger spaces where it has room to reach its full potential. In landscape settings, it is often used as a specimen tree, windbreak, or privacy screen, especially when planted in rows.
- This tree performs best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well drained soil with consistent moisture. While it is somewhat adaptable, it thrives in cooler coastal climates with regular fog or humidity. In warmer inland areas, it will benefit from deeper, more frequent watering, especially during establishment.
- In ideal conditions, Sequoia sempervirens can grow well over 100 feet tall, with a spread of 15 to 30 feet, though growth may be more moderate in residential landscapes. It is well suited for USDA zones 7 through 10.
