Liquidambar styraciflua, commonly known as American Sweetgum, is a deciduous tree best known for its dramatic fall color. If you’re looking for that classic seasonal shift with bold reds, oranges, and purples, this is one of the trees that really delivers.

The leaves are star shaped and have a clean, structured look during the growing season, starting out bright green and gradually deepening before putting on that fall display. It’s one of the more reliable trees for strong autumn color in the right climate.

The tree develops a tall, upright form when young, eventually maturing into a broader canopy that provides good shade. It works well as a street tree, in larger yards, or anywhere you have space for it to grow into its full size.

One thing to be aware of is the seed pods, often called “gumballs,” which drop in fall and can be messy in high traffic areas. Because of that, placement is important depending on how the space is used.

Liquidambar styraciflua grows best in full sun and prefers well drained soil, though it can tolerate a range of conditions once established. It benefits from regular watering, especially when young, and tends to perform best in areas with a bit of seasonal variation.

It can reach 40 to 60 feet tall and 25 to 40 feet wide over time, forming a large, shade casting canopy. It is well suited for USDA zones 5 through 9 and is quite cold hardy. The foliage is deciduous. Although it prefers cooler climates for the best fall color, we do see it perform in parts of Southern California with the right conditions, which is why we have included zone 10.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers are not particularly showy, but the tree can provide habitat value for wildlife.

It is generally deer resistant, though young trees may need some protection.

I’ve always liked this tree because it reminds me of being a kid playing in piles of fallen leaves with my mom. There’s something about that fall color and the way the leaves collect on the ground that just feels nostalgic. If you’re trying to bring a little bit of that seasonal experience into a space, this is one of the trees that can really do it. Just be careful not to plant them too close to adjacent hardscape surface, block walls, etc as the root system can definitely cause some issues.
