Aeonium arboreum ‘Zwartkop’, commonly known as Black Rose Aeonium, is a bold, sculptural succulent known for its deep, dramatic color. It’s often used to create contrast and anchor a planting with something that immediately stands out.

The rosettes are large and glossy, with rich burgundy to nearly black tones, especially in full sun. That dark coloration gives it a strong visual weight, making it a great counterpoint to lighter or more vibrant plants.

Each rosette sits on top of branching stems, allowing the plant to develop a layered, almost tree like form over time. It adds height and structure compared to lower growing succulents, making it useful in mixed plantings.

In late winter to spring, mature plants may send up tall flower spikes with clusters of small yellow blooms. After flowering, the individual rosette may decline, but the plant continues to grow through its branching structure.

Aeonium ‘Zwartkop’ grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well drained soil. It benefits from occasional watering, especially during its active growing season in cooler months.

It typically reaches about 3 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, forming an upright, branching structure. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is sensitive to frost. The foliage is evergreen in mild climates.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers may attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant.

Aeonium arboreum ‘Zwartkop’ fits especially well into Mediterranean, succulent, and modern garden designs, where its color can be used as a focal point or to create strong contrast.

It pairs well with plants like Kalanchoe luciae for bold contrast, Sedum rubrotinctum as a low ground layer, and Agave vilmoriniana to add a accented structural element. 

Expert Tip:

I like using this as a contrast piece against lighter or silvery plants. That dark color really stands out when you give it something to play off of, and repeating it a couple times in a planting helps tie the whole design together.
