Ajuga reptans ‘Catlin’s Giant’, commonly known as Bugleweed, is a fast spreading groundcover that’s great for filling in space with a dense, low layer of foliage. It’s especially useful in areas where you want coverage without a lot of height.

The leaves are larger than typical ajuga varieties, with a deep green to bronze tone that can shift depending on light and season. That broader leaf gives it a fuller, more substantial look compared to finer groundcovers.

In spring, it sends up short flower spikes with clusters of blue to violet blooms that rise just above the foliage. When planted in groups, the flowers create a nice wash of color across the surface.

It spreads by runners, gradually forming a thick mat that helps suppress weeds and cover bare soil. It works well under trees, along borders, or in areas where turf might be difficult to maintain.

Ajuga ‘Catlin’s Giant’ grows best in partial shade to full sun, though it tends to look its best with some protection from harsh afternoon sun. It prefers well drained soil and benefits from occasional watering, especially in drier conditions.

It typically stays around 6 to 12 inches tall, with flower spikes reaching slightly higher, and spreads outward over time. It is well suited for USDA zones 4 through 9 and is fairly adaptable. The foliage is evergreen to semi evergreen depending on climate. It can also perform in milder parts of Zone 10 given the right conditions.  Provide partial shade in zone 10.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer resistant, though occasional browsing may occur.

Ajuga ‘Catlin’s Giant’ fits especially well into woodland, cottage, and groundcover-focused designs, where it can be used for coverage, texture, and seasonal color.

Expert Tip:

 I love using this as a foreground or bordering plant in Woodland themed landscapes. Then I will create a secondary layer, often with an ornamental grass like Acorus Ogon or Lomandra Miners Gold to create contrast.  This will create an epic focal point!
