Aeonium ‘Sunburst’ is a striking variegated succulent that brings brightness and structure into the landscape. It’s one of those plants that naturally draws attention, especially when planted where the light can hit it just right.

The rosettes are large and layered, with creamy yellow centers, soft green edges, and occasional blush tones of pink along the margins. Each rosette sits at the end of a branching stem, giving the plant a sculptural, almost tiered look as it matures.

Compared to lower growing succulents, this one adds height and dimension. It forms a small shrub over time, making it useful for layering within succulent gardens rather than just filling space at the ground level.

In late winter to spring, mature rosettes may produce tall flower spikes with clusters of small yellow blooms. After flowering, the individual rosette may decline, but the plant continues to grow through its offsets.

Aeonium ‘Sunburst’ grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well drained soil. It benefits from occasional watering, especially during its active growing season in cooler months.

It typically reaches about 2 to 4 feet tall and wide, forming a branching, upright structure. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is sensitive to frost. The foliage is evergreen in mild climates.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers may attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant.

Aeonium ‘Sunburst’ fits especially well into Mediterranean, succulent, and modern garden designs, where its color and form can be used as a focal point.

It pairs well with plants like Echeveria 'Afterglow’ for strong color contrast, Sedum ‘De Oro’ to create a low, bright ground layer, and Agave americana ‘Marginata’ to reinforce the variegated palette with a more structural form.

Expert Tip:

I like placing this where it gets a bit of protection from harsh afternoon sun so the variegation doesn’t burn. It also looks best when you give it a little space to show off its shape, especially as it starts to branch and layer over time.
