Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’, commonly known as Feather Reed Grass, is one of the most popular ornamental grasses for adding structure and movement to the garden. It forms tight, upright clumps of slender green blades that create a clean, vertical look, making it especially useful in modern and formal landscapes.

In late spring to early summer, tall flower spikes emerge above the foliage, starting out with a soft, feathery appearance in shades of pink to tan. As the season progresses, these plumes mature to a warm golden color and can persist well into fall and even winter, providing long lasting interest.

This grass holds its shape exceptionally well, staying upright rather than flopping, which makes it a reliable choice for lining walkways, creating rhythm in planting beds, or adding height without taking up too much space.

Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’ performs best in full sun but can tolerate light shade. It prefers well drained soil and moderate watering, though it can handle a range of conditions once established. Occasional cutting back in late winter will refresh the plant and encourage strong new growth in spring.

It typically grows about 3 to 5 feet tall when in bloom, with a narrow spread of 1.5 to 2 feet. It is well suited for USDA zones 4 through 9 and is hardy down to well below freezing temperatures. The foliage is semi evergreen in milder climates but will go dormant in colder regions.

This plant is considered non toxic, making it a safe option for gardens with pets and children.

The flower plumes can attract pollinators early in the season and provide habitat value as they persist.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, making it a dependable, low maintenance choice.
