Few trees make as much of a statement in bloom as Jacaranda mimosifolia, commonly known as Jacaranda. Native to South America, it’s best known for its stunning display of lavender blue flowers that seem to cover the entire canopy in late spring to early summer.

When in full bloom, the tree creates a soft haze of color that can carpet the ground beneath it with fallen petals, giving it a very distinctive, almost iconic look. The finely textured, fern like foliage adds to that light, airy feel and provides filtered shade once the flowers fade.

Jacaranda has a broad, spreading canopy and works best when given room to grow. It’s often used as a shade tree along streets, in larger yards, or as a focal point where its seasonal color can really be appreciated.

It grows best in full sun and prefers well drained soil. Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant, though occasional deep watering will support better growth and flowering. It performs especially well in warm climates with mild winters.

This tree can reach 25 to 40 feet tall and just as wide over time, developing a wide, umbrella like canopy. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is hardy down to around 25 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is deciduous to semi deciduous depending on climate. This plant can be seen down many streets here in Southern California creating an epic canopy of purple!

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers can attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer resistant, though young trees may need some protection. Rabbits may occasionally nibble new growth.

Jacaranda fits especially well into Mediterranean, coastal, and tropical style landscapes, where its bold seasonal color and graceful form can really stand out.
