Helichrysum petiolare ‘Limelight’ is one of those plants you reach for when a space needs brightness without adding flowers. The foliage does all the work here, with soft, velvety leaves in a fresh chartreuse tone that instantly lifts the surrounding planting.

Native to South Africa, it has a relaxed, slightly trailing habit that makes it especially useful for softening edges. It can spill over walls, drape out of containers, or weave between other plants to create a more layered, natural look.

The texture is just as important as the color. The leaves have a fuzzy, almost felt-like surface that contrasts nicely with glossy foliage or more structured plants. It brings a softer, more casual feel into the design.

While it can produce small flowers, they’re usually not the main feature. Most of the time, it’s used purely for its foliage and the way it blends with other plants.

Helichrysum ‘Limelight’ grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well drained soil. It is fairly drought tolerant once established, though it will look fuller and more vibrant with occasional watering.

It typically stays around 1 to 2 feet tall but can spread or trail several feet depending on how it’s used. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is sensitive to frost. The foliage is evergreen in mild climates. 

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers may attract minor pollinator activity, though it is primarily grown for ornamental foliage.

It is generally deer resistant, though occasional browsing may occur.

Helichrysum ‘Limelight’ fits especially well into Mediterranean, coastal, and container garden designs, where its color and texture can be used to brighten and soften plantings.

Expert Tip:

If your plant selections are feeling too dark and visually heavy, add this one! That bright chartreuse color really helps wake things up, especially when you pair it with deeper greens or purples. It’s also great spilling out of containers where you can really see that color and texture up close.  Just make sure to cut it back every season to keep the foliage coming back nice and tight.
