Dymondia margaretae
Dymondia margaretae, commonly known as Silver Carpet, is a tough, low growing groundcover that forms a dense mat of narrow, gray green leaves with a soft silvery underside. This subtle two tone effect gives the plant a textured, almost shimmering look, especially when it moves in the breeze.
In summer, it produces small yellow daisy like flowers that sit just above the foliage, adding a light pop of color without taking away from its clean, uniform appearance.
Silver Carpet is a popular choice for planting between pavers, along pathways, or as a lawn alternative in low traffic areas. It creates a tight, weed suppressing carpet and can handle light foot traffic once established, making it both practical and visually appealing.
This plant performs best in full sun and requires well drained soil. Amending clay soil is a must! It is highly drought tolerant once established and is especially well suited for coastal conditions, including wind and salt exposure. It is important not to overwater, as Dymondia can be susceptible to root rot in overly wet conditions. Deep, infrequent watering is the best approach once it is established.
When planting new areas, using a pre emergent can be helpful to prevent weed seeds from germinating while the groundcover is filling in, helping it establish a clean, uniform mat more quickly.
Dymondia margaretae typically grows about 1 to 3 inches tall and spreads steadily outward over time. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is hardy down to around 20 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is evergreen in mild climates.
This plant is considered non toxic, making it a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.
The flowers can attract small pollinators such as bees.
It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, making it a reliable option for low maintenance landscapes.
With its low profile, drought tolerance, and clean, finished look, Silver Carpet is an excellent choice for filling in spaces and creating a polished groundcover in sunny areas. One of our favorites!
