- Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’, commonly known as Bloodgood Japanese Maple, is one of the most popular and reliable red leaf Japanese maples. It is prized for its deep burgundy foliage that holds its rich color well through the growing season, adding a bold yet refined look to the landscape.
- In spring, the leaves emerge a vibrant red before deepening to a rich burgundy through summer. In fall, the foliage turns a brilliant crimson, creating a striking seasonal display. The finely cut leaves and layered branching structure give this tree a graceful, almost sculptural presence.
- Bloodgood has a naturally upright, rounded growth habit that becomes more spreading with age. It works beautifully as a focal point in garden beds, near patios, or in courtyards where its color and form can be appreciated up close.
- This tree performs best in partial shade, especially in warmer climates where protection from hot afternoon sun helps prevent leaf scorch. It prefers rich, well drained soil and consistent moisture. Regular watering is important, particularly during establishment and in hotter conditions.
- It typically grows 15 to 20 feet tall and wide over time. It is well suited for USDA zones 5 through 8 and is hardy down to well below freezing temperatures. The foliage is deciduous. Some sources have this plant going up to zone 8, but we have seen it thriving up to zone 10 here in Southern California, which is why we have included these zones.
- This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.
- The flowers are small and not particularly showy, but may attract minor pollinator activity.
- It is generally deer resistant, though young trees may need protection. Rabbits may occasionally nibble tender growth.
- Bloodgood Japanese Maple is especially well suited for Japanese, Zen, and woodland garden designs, where its rich color and elegant form can really stand out.
