Aloe striata, commonly known as Coral Aloe, is a smooth, elegant succulent that brings soft color and refined form into the landscape. It stands out for its clean look and subtle tones, making it easy to incorporate into a wide range of designs.

The foliage forms broad, open rosettes with flat, fleshy leaves in a muted blue green to gray tone. The edges are smooth and often highlighted with a soft pink or coral tint, especially during cooler weather or periods of stress, which gives the plant added visual interest.

Unlike many aloes, it has no sharp spines, giving it a more approachable and polished appearance. It works well in areas where people may be walking nearby or interacting with the plant.

In late winter to early spring, it produces tall flower stalks topped with clusters of coral to orange tubular blooms. The flowers rise well above the foliage and attract hummingbirds, adding height and seasonal color.

It works well as a focal point, in small groupings, or as a repeating element in a drought tolerant planting.

Aloe striata grows best in full sun to partial shade and requires well drained soil. It is highly drought tolerant once established and performs well in warm, dry conditions.

It typically reaches about 1 to 2 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide per rosette, forming a low, spreading cluster over time. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11. The foliage is evergreen.

This plant has low to moderate toxicity if ingested, so placement should be considered around pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees and are especially attractive to hummingbirds.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant.

Aloe striata fits especially well into Mediterranean, desert, and modern garden designs, where its soft color and clean form can be used to create contrast and balance.

It pairs well with plants like Dudleya pulverulenta to reinforce the soft, silvery palette, Euphorbia ‘Black Bird’ to introduce a dark contrasting layer, and Senecio mandraliscae to create a cool toned, low groundcover that complements the overall composition.

Expert Tip:

Place this in well drained soil and avoid heavy irrigation, because it performs best in drier conditions. Allowing the soil to dry between watering will help maintain its clean form and prevent rot.
