Heuchera ‘Crimson Curls’, commonly known as Coral Bells, is a bold foliage perennial that brings rich color and texture into the landscape. It’s especially effective for adding depth and contrast in shaded or partially shaded areas.

The foliage is deeply ruffled and curled, with intense burgundy to deep red tones that hold throughout the season. The textured leaves create a layered, almost sculptural look that stands out against smoother foliage.

In late spring through summer, slender stems rise above the foliage, carrying small, bell-shaped flowers in soft pink tones. While subtle, they add a light, airy contrast to the darker leaves.

It forms a compact, mounded clump, making it ideal for borders, containers, or as a colorful ground layer in mixed plantings.

Heuchera ‘Crimson Curls’ grows best in partial shade to full shade and prefers well drained soil. It benefits from consistent moisture but should not be kept overly wet.

It typically reaches about 8 to 12 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide, forming a dense, low mound. It is well suited for USDA zones 4 through 9, however, we also see it thriving here in Southern California which is why we have included zone 10. The foliage is evergreen to semi evergreen depending on climate.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer resistant.

Heuchera ‘Crimson Curls’ fits especially well into woodland, cottage, and container garden designs, where its foliage can be used to create contrast and visual interest.

It pairs well with plants like Carex oshimensis ‘Evergold’ to introduce bright contrast, Ferns such as Dryopteris erythrosora to add soft texture, and Bergenia crassifolia to create a layered planting with bold foliage.

Expert Tip:

Place this in filtered light to protect the rich foliage color, because too much direct sun can cause fading or scorch. Removing older leaves periodically will also keep the plant looking fresh and vibrant.
