Equisetum hyemale, commonly known as Horsetail Reed, is a highly architectural, upright plant that brings a bold, vertical element into the landscape. It’s often used for its clean lines and modern look, especially in minimalist or contemporary designs.

The stems are tall, hollow, and segmented, with a deep green color and subtle black banding at each joint. There are no traditional leaves, which gives it a very stripped down, almost graphic appearance. When planted in groups, it creates a strong, rhythmic pattern that feels structured and intentional.

It naturally grows in dense, upright colonies, making it effective for screening, defining spaces, or creating a living wall effect. It’s especially striking when used in repetition or in narrow planting strips.

Equisetum hyemale grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist soil. It can even tolerate standing water, making it suitable for water features or poorly drained areas, including bog planting.

It typically reaches about 3 to 5 feet tall and spreads outward over time as colonies expand. It is well suited for USDA zones 4 through 11. The stems are evergreen.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

It does not produce showy flowers and is primarily grown for its structural form.

One important consideration is its aggressive spreading habit. Equisetum spreads by underground rhizomes and spores, allowing it to naturalize quickly. Without containment, it can take over planting areas and become difficult to control and has become problematic in many areas across the US. 

Equisetum hyemale fits especially well into modern, Japanese-inspired, and water feature designs, where its vertical lines can be used to create strong visual structure.

It pairs well with plants like Acer palmatum varieties to soften the vertical lines with delicate foliage, Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’ to create a dark, contrasting ground layer, and Carex oshimensis ‘Evergold’ to introduce a softer, flowing texture that balances the rigid form.

Expert Tip:

Place this in a contained area such as a planter or with a root barrier, because it spreads aggressively through rhizomes and can quickly take over. Controlling its root zone from the start will make it much easier to manage long term.
