- Salvia clevelandii, commonly known as Cleveland Sage, is one of those plants that instantly makes a garden feel like Southern California. Native to the region and a key part of the chaparral plant community, it thrives in hot, dry conditions and brings both fragrance and structure to the landscape.
- The foliage is a soft gray green and highly aromatic—brush past it and you’ll get that classic sage scent that really defines the plant. It forms a rounded, somewhat open shrub that feels natural and relaxed rather than overly manicured.
- In late spring through early summer, it produces clusters of lavender to purple flowers arranged in whorls along upright stems. The blooms rise above the foliage and create a hazy layer of color that’s especially attractive to bees and other pollinators.
- This is a great plant for native gardens, slopes, or areas where you want something drought tolerant that still has a strong visual and sensory presence. It pairs well with other chaparral plants and fits easily into more naturalistic designs.
- Salvia clevelandii grows best in full sun and requires excellent drainage. Once established, it is extremely drought tolerant and prefers little to no summer water. In fact, overwatering can shorten its lifespan.
