• Aloe arborescens, commonly known as Tree Aloe or Torch Aloe, is a bold, fast growing succulent known for its striking form and vibrant winter blooms. It forms large, multi branching clumps of gray green, serrated leaves that create a strong architectural presence in the landscape.
• In late fall through winter, Torch Aloe produces tall flower spikes topped with clusters of bright red to orange tubular flowers. These blooms create a dramatic display and are especially valuable for adding color during the cooler months. The flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds, along with bees and other pollinators.
• This aloe has a naturally shrubby growth habit and can be used as a focal point, mass planting, or informal screen. It works well on slopes, in raised beds, or anywhere a bold, drought tolerant plant is needed.
• Aloe arborescens performs best in full sun to partial shade and requires well drained soil. It is highly drought tolerant once established and thrives in dry, low water conditions. Overwatering should be avoided, as excess moisture can lead to rot.
• It typically grows 6 to 10 feet tall and wide over time, forming a large, spreading clump. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is hardy down to around 25 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is evergreen. This plant thrives in Zone 10 as we often see it in Southern California landscapes.
• This plant has some toxicity and may cause irritation or illness if ingested, so it is best to plant with care around pets and children.
• The flowers attract pollinators such as hummingbirds and bees.
• It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, making it a dependable option for low maintenance landscapes.
• Torch Aloe is especially well suited for Mediterranean, xeriscape, and coastal gardens, where its bold form and winter color can really stand out.
• With its striking structure, vibrant blooms, and low water needs, Aloe arborescens is a powerful addition to warm climate landscapes.
