Rosmarinus officinalis ‘Tuscan Blue’, commonly known as Tuscan Blue Rosemary, is one of those plants that checks a lot of boxes. It’s useful, durable, and looks good doing it. With its upright growth and rich green foliage, it brings both structure and a bit of a Mediterranean feel to the landscape.

The leaves are narrow and aromatic, with that classic rosemary scent that releases when brushed or pruned. It’s a plant that engages more than just visually, which makes it a great fit near walkways, patios, or outdoor kitchens.

In cooler months and often again throughout the year, it produces small blue flowers along the stems. They’re not overly showy, but they add a soft layer of color and are attractive to bees and other pollinators.

Unlike trailing rosemary varieties, ‘Tuscan Blue’ grows upright and can even be shaped into a hedge or informal screen. It works well along fences, in raised beds, or as a structural element in mixed plantings.

It thrives in full sun and prefers well drained soil. Once established, it is very drought tolerant and handles heat, wind, and coastal conditions with ease. It’s one of those plants that actually prefers a lighter touch when it comes to watering.

It typically grows about 4 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, forming a tall, somewhat narrow shrub. It is well suited for USDA zones 8 through 11 and is hardy down to around 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is evergreen. 

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children, and it’s widely used in cooking.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, making it a dependable option for low maintenance plantings.

Tuscan Blue Rosemary fits especially well into Mediterranean, edible, and drought tolerant garden designs, where it can be used for hedging, screening, or as a functional accent.

I like planting this close to the grill or outdoor kitchen so it’s always within reach. Being able to just grab a few sprigs while cooking is one of those small things that makes the space feel more intentional and usable.
