Festuca ‘Elijah Blue’, commonly known as Blue Fescue, is a compact ornamental grass that’s all about color and texture. Its icy blue foliage forms tight, spiky mounds that instantly stand out, especially when paired with darker greens or warm toned plants.

This is one of those plants that works best in repetition. When planted in small groups or drifts, it creates a rhythmic pattern of soft, rounded forms that can really elevate a design without overwhelming it.

In late spring to early summer, slender flower stalks rise above the foliage, adding a light, airy layer. The blooms are subtle and often take on a tan hue as they mature, blending nicely into the overall look.

It prefers full sun, where the blue color stays most intense, and does best in well drained soil. Overly rich or wet conditions can cause it to lose its tight form, so a leaner, drier setting tends to suit it best.

This grass stays fairly small, usually around 8 to 12 inches tall and about as wide, forming neat, rounded clumps. It is well suited for USDA zones 4 through 8 and is quite cold hardy. The foliage is evergreen to semi evergreen depending on climate. Some sources list it up to zone 8, but we’ve seen it perform in zone 9 and even parts of zone 10 here in Southern California with proper drainage.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers may attract minor pollinator activity.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, making it a dependable option for low maintenance plantings.

Festuca ‘Elijah Blue’ fits especially well into Mediterranean, rock garden, and modern landscape designs, where its color and form can be used for contrast and repetition.

With its cool toned foliage, compact size, and easy care nature, this is a great plant for adding structure and a pop of color in smaller spaces.
