Kalanchoe pumila, commonly known as Flower Dust Plant, is a soft, silvery succulent that adds a light, almost frosted look to the garden. Native to Madagascar, it’s especially valued for its powdery leaves and delicate color, which can help brighten up heavier plantings.

The small, scalloped leaves are coated in a fine white bloom, giving them that dusty, pale appearance. This cool tone makes it a great companion for darker succulents or plants with deeper greens, creating contrast without being overpowering.

In late winter through spring, it produces clusters of small, lavender pink flowers that rise just above the foliage. The blooms add a gentle pop of color and can attract pollinators such as bees.

This plant has a low, spreading habit and works well in containers, rock gardens, or tucked into mixed succulent beds. It can also spill slightly over edges, softening hard lines in the landscape.

Kalanchoe pumila does best in full sun to partial shade and needs well drained soil to thrive. It is drought tolerant once established and should be watered sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Like many succulents, it does not tolerate overly wet conditions.

It typically grows about 6 to 12 inches tall and can spread 1 to 2 feet wide over time. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is sensitive to frost, tolerating temperatures down to around 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is evergreen. 

This plant has some toxicity and may cause irritation or illness if ingested, so it is best to plant with care around pets and children.

When in bloom, the flowers can attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, making it a dependable option for low maintenance plantings.

Kalanchoe pumila fits especially well into succulent gardens, Mediterranean designs, and modern container arrangements, where its soft color and texture can be used to create contrast and balance.
