Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’, commonly known as Autumn Joy Stonecrop, is a reliable, upright perennial that brings structure and late season color into the landscape. It’s especially valuable for extending interest into fall when many other plants begin to fade.

The foliage emerges as thick, succulent leaves in a soft blue green tone, forming a sturdy, upright clump. It has a clean, simple look that works well as a backdrop or mid-layer plant.

In late summer, flat clusters of soft pink flowers begin to form, gradually deepening into rich rose and copper tones as the season progresses. By fall, the blooms take on a deeper, almost rusty color, adding warmth and seasonal depth to the garden.

The dried flower heads can persist into winter, providing additional texture and visual interest even after the growing season.

It has a strong, upright habit that holds its shape well, making it useful for borders, mass plantings, or as a repeating element in a design.

Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ grows best in full sun and requires well drained soil. It is highly drought tolerant once established and performs well in low water landscapes.

It typically reaches about 1.5 to 2 feet tall and wide, forming a sturdy, mounded clump. It is well suited for USDA zones 3 through 9. We have added zone 10 since we see it thriving here in Southern CA.  The foliage is deciduous.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant.

Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ fits especially well into Mediterranean, cottage, and perennial border designs, where its seasonal color can be used to carry the garden into fall.

It pairs well with plants like Rudbeckia hirta to amplify warm fall tones, Panicum virgatum to add vertical movement and contrast, and Echinacea purpurea to create a layered, pollinator-friendly planting with overlapping bloom times.

Expert Tip:

Place this in full sun and avoid overly rich soil, because too much fertility can cause the stems to flop. Leaner conditions help it stay more upright and maintain a cleaner, stronger form.
