Sedum reflexum ‘Blue Spruce’, commonly known as Blue Spruce Stonecrop, is a low growing succulent that brings cool color and fine texture into the landscape. Its needle-like foliage and blue tone give it a look that resembles a miniature conifer, making it a great contrast plant.

The foliage is made up of short, pointed leaves that form dense, trailing stems. The color ranges from blue green to silvery blue, especially in full sun, creating a cool, calming palette.

It spreads steadily over time, forming a soft, flowing mat that works well along edges, between stones, or cascading slightly over walls and containers.

In summer, it produces clusters of small, star shaped yellow flowers that rise just above the foliage, adding a bright seasonal contrast to the cooler tones below.

Because of its texture and color, it’s especially useful for softening hardscape and tying together planting areas.

Sedum ‘Blue Spruce’ grows best in full sun and requires well drained soil. It is highly drought tolerant once established and performs well in low water landscapes.

It typically stays around 4 to 6 inches tall and spreads outward as it forms a dense groundcover. It is well suited for USDA zones 4 through 9. We have also included zone 10 since we see it thrive here in Southern California, California.  The foliage is evergreen to semi evergreen depending on climate.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers may attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant.

Sedum reflexum ‘Blue Spruce’ fits especially well into Mediterranean, rock garden, and modern landscape designs, where its color and texture can be used to soften edges and create contrast.

It pairs well with plants like Echinocactus grusonii to create a bold contrast between fine and bold forms, Festuca glauca to reinforce the cool blue tones in a more upright form, and Delosperma cooperi to introduce a low, flowering layer with vibrant color.

Expert Tip:

Place this in full sun and well drained soil, because strong light helps maintain its compact form and blue coloration. Leaner conditions will also keep it from becoming too loose or stretched over time.
