- Senecio mandraliscae, commonly known as Blue Chalk Sticks, is a striking succulent groundcover known for its slender, finger like leaves in a cool blue gray color. The foliage creates a smooth, flowing texture that adds contrast and a modern feel to the landscape, especially when paired with darker greens or warmer toned plants.
- This plant forms a low, spreading mat that works well as a groundcover, in rock gardens, or spilling over edges of planters and retaining walls. Its clean color and simple form make it a popular choice in drought tolerant and coastal designs.
- In summer, it may produce small, creamy white flowers that rise slightly above the foliage. While the blooms are subtle, they can attract pollinators such as bees.
- Senecio mandraliscae performs best in full sun and requires well drained soil. It is highly drought tolerant once established and thrives in dry, low water conditions. Overwatering should be avoided, as excess moisture can lead to rot, especially in heavier soils.
- It typically grows about 12 to 18 inches tall and can spread several feet wide over time, forming a dense, flowing groundcover. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is hardy down to around 25 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is evergreen in mild climates.
- This plant is considered toxic if ingested, so it is best to use some caution around pets and children.
- It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, making it a reliable option for low maintenance landscapes.
- With its cool blue color, drought tolerance, and easy spreading habit, Blue Chalk Sticks is a great choice for adding texture and contrast to sunny, dry garden spaces.
