Santolina chamaecyparissus, commonly known as Lavender Cotton, is a compact, evergreen shrub valued for its soft, silvery foliage and neat, mounding form. The finely textured leaves have a feathery look and a light, aromatic quality, giving the plant a cool, calming presence in the garden.

In late spring through summer, it produces small, bright yellow button like flowers that rise just above the foliage, adding a cheerful pop of color that contrasts nicely with the silver tones below.

This plant naturally forms a tight, rounded shape, making it a great choice for low hedges, borders, knot gardens, or as a structural element in more formal designs. It also works well in mass plantings and pairs beautifully with other drought tolerant plants.

Santolina performs best in full sun and requires well drained soil. It is highly drought tolerant once established and thrives in dry, low water conditions. Overwatering or poorly drained soil can lead to decline, so a lighter watering approach is best.

It typically grows 1 to 2 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, maintaining a compact, mounded form. It is well suited for USDA zones 6 through 9 and is hardy down to around 0 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. This plant can also thrive in Zone 10 as we often see it in Southern California landscapes.  The foliage is evergreen in mild climates.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers can attract pollinators such as bees.

It is highly deer and rabbit resistant, making it a dependable option for low maintenance landscapes.
