Senecio cylindricus, commonly known as Narrow-Leaf Chalksticks, is a striking succulent that brings bold texture and cool color into the landscape. It’s especially effective for adding contrast and structure in drought tolerant plantings.

The foliage consists of long, cylindrical leaves that stand upright and form dense clusters. The color is a soft blue gray, creating a cool, muted tone that pairs well with both warm and neutral palettes.

It spreads steadily by underground stems, forming a low, dense mass that can be used as a groundcover or a repeating element in larger plantings.

In late summer to fall, it may produce small, white flowers, though it is primarily grown for its sculptural foliage.

Its upright, finger-like leaves create a strong visual contrast against softer or broader-leaved plants.

Senecio cylindricus grows best in full sun to partial shade and requires well drained soil. It is highly drought tolerant once established and thrives in dry, open conditions.

It typically reaches about 1 to 2 feet tall and spreads outward as it forms a dense colony. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11. The foliage is evergreen.

This plant has moderate toxicity if ingested, so placement should be considered around pets and children.

The flowers may attract minor pollinator activity.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant.

Senecio cylindricus fits especially well into Mediterranean, desert, and modern garden designs, where its texture and color can be used to create contrast and rhythm.

It pairs well with plants like Agave parryi var. truncata to introduce a bold focal point, Aloe ‘Blue Elf’ to add seasonal flowering contrast, and Ruschia ‘Nana’ to create a clean, low ground layer beneath.

Expert Tip:

Place this in full sun with excellent drainage, because strong light helps maintain its compact, upright form and color. Avoid overwatering, as excess moisture can lead to decline.
