  • Lotus berthelotii, commonly known as Parrot’s Beak, is a unique and eye catching trailing plant known for its finely textured foliage and vibrant, curved flowers. The leaves are soft, silvery green and needle like, creating a light, airy texture that contrasts beautifully with its bold blooms.
  • In spring through early summer, it produces striking flowers in shades of fiery red to orange, shaped like a parrot’s beak. The blooms stand out dramatically against the cool toned foliage and can attract pollinators such as bees.
  • This plant has a low, trailing growth habit and is especially well suited for hanging baskets, containers, or spilling over walls and edges. It adds a soft, cascading effect and works well in mixed plantings where texture and color contrast are desired.
  • Lotus berthelotii performs best in full sun and prefers well drained soil. It requires regular watering but should not be kept overly wet, as it can be sensitive to poor drainage. In many cases, it is treated as a seasonal or short lived perennial, especially in hotter inland climates.
  • It typically grows about 6 to 12 inches tall and can spread 1 to 2 feet or more, forming a trailing mat. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is hardy down to around 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is evergreen in mild climates. This plant can also thrive in Zone 10 as we often see it in Southern California landscapes.
  • This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.
  • The flowers can attract pollinators such as bees.
  • It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, though tender growth may occasionally be browsed.
  • Parrot’s Beak is especially well suited for coastal, Mediterranean, and container garden designs, where its trailing habit and bold flowers can really stand out.
  • With its unique blooms, soft foliage, and cascading form, Lotus berthelotii is a standout choice for adding texture and color to sunny garden spaces.
  • Expert Tip:
  • Good drainage is key, especially in containers. If it starts to look a little tired, I’ll give it a light trim to encourage fresh growth rather than trying to push it with more water.
