Bergenia crassifolia, commonly known as Bergenia or Pig Squeak, is a bold, low growing perennial valued for its large, glossy leaves and early seasonal blooms. It’s a great choice for adding structure and year round presence in shaded or partially shaded areas.

The foliage is made up of thick, rounded leaves with a deep green, slightly glossy surface. The leaves have a substantial, almost leathery feel and can develop reddish or bronze tones during cooler months, adding seasonal variation.

In late winter to early spring, clusters of pink to magenta flowers rise above the foliage on sturdy stems. The blooms provide an early pop of color and help bridge the gap between winter and spring plantings.

It forms a dense, clumping groundcover that gradually spreads, making it useful for borders, underplanting, or filling in shaded garden beds.

Bergenia crassifolia grows best in partial shade to full shade and prefers well drained soil. It benefits from consistent moisture but is fairly adaptable once established.

It typically reaches about 12 to 18 inches tall and spreads outward over time to form a broad clump. It is well suited for USDA zones 3 through 9, however we also see it thriving here in zone 10 in Southern CA.  The foliage is evergreen to semi evergreen depending on climate.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer resistant.

Bergenia crassifolia fits especially well into woodland, cottage, and shade garden designs, where its bold foliage can be used to create contrast and structure.

It pairs well with plants like Heuchera varieties to layer in complementary foliage tones, Helleborus to extend early season blooms, and Carex oshimensis ‘Evergold’ to introduce a softer, flowing texture.

Expert Tip:

Place this in areas with filtered light and consistent moisture, because it performs best when protected from intense sun. Removing older leaves periodically will also help keep the plant looking clean and encourage fresh growth.
