Phormium 'Guardsman' is perhaps the most impressive of the New Zealand Flax varieties.  It has one of the strongest upright growth ability reaching to as much as 7' tall.  The blades are 1-2" wide with rich vibrant burgundy/red tones.  Leaves appear more vibrant as it catches the sunlight at certain angles.  Guardsman Flax can also tolerate seaside and coastal conditions and is fairly drought tolerant.  This amazing perennial is native to New Zealand (hence the name) and is widely used throughout Mediterranean-like climates.  All varieties of Phormiums can be seen across Southern California and is a favorite among landscape designers.  It can be used several ways in the landscape, such as a single specamin accent plant, mass plantings, and large potted arrangements.  Phormium Guardsman is hardy to about 20 deg. F.
