The Mickey Rockrose, sometimes called Variegated Sageleaf Rockrose, is a vibrantly colored shrub up to about 3' tall by 2.5-3' wide.

It's a sun loving evergreen shrub that brings a relaxed, Mediterranean feel to the landscape. It’s especially appreciated for its ability to handle heat, dry conditions, and lean soils while still putting on a great seasonal show.

The foliage is a soft gray green with a slightly textured surface, giving the plant a muted, natural look that pairs well with other drought tolerant plantings. In spring and early summer, it comes alive with bright pink flowers, each marked with a deeper magenta blotch at the base of the petals, adding a bit of contrast and character.

Each individual bloom only lasts a short time, but the plant produces them in abundance, so you still get a strong display over several weeks.

‘Mickey’ tends to form a low, spreading mound, making it useful for covering slopes, filling in open areas, or softening the edges of pathways and walls. It’s a great option if you’re looking for something that feels a little more natural and less formal.

It does best in full sun and requires well drained soil. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant and actually prefers drier conditions. Overwatering or heavy soils can lead to issues, so good drainage is key.

This variety typically grows around 2 to 3 feet tall and can spread 4 to 6 feet wide, forming a broad, low profile. It is well suited for USDA zones 8 through 10 and is hardy down to around 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is evergreen. 

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers can attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer resistant and typically avoided by rabbits once established.

Cistus ‘Mickey’ fits especially well into Mediterranean, coastal, and xeriscape gardens, where its toughness and seasonal color can be put to good use.
