Lavandula x intermedia ‘Grosso’, commonly known as Grosso Lavender, is a classic, high performing lavender known for its strong fragrance, long flower spikes, and reliable structure. It’s one of the most popular varieties for both landscape use and harvesting.

The foliage is narrow and gray green, forming a dense, mounded base with a soft, silvery tone. It creates a clean, consistent foundation that works well in both formal and informal plantings.

In late spring through summer, tall stems rise above the foliage, topped with elongated spikes of deep violet purple flowers. The blooms are highly fragrant and are commonly used for drying, oils, and cut arrangements.

Compared to other lavenders, ‘Grosso’ has a more upright and structured habit, making it ideal for hedging, mass planting, or creating strong visual lines in the garden.

Lavandula ‘Grosso’ grows best in full sun and requires well drained soil. It thrives in dry conditions and performs best with minimal water once established.

It typically reaches about 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, forming a broad, rounded mound. It is well suited for USDA zones 5 through 9, however it is also seen thriving here in Southern California which is why we have included zone 10. The foliage is evergreen to semi evergreen depending on climate.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant.

Lavandula x intermedia ‘Grosso’ fits especially well into Mediterranean, cottage, and formal garden designs, where its fragrance and structure can be used to create rhythm and cohesion.

It pairs well with plants like Rosmarinus officinalis ‘Tuscan Blue’ to reinforce a classic Mediterranean palette, Santolina chamaecyparissus to echo silvery tones with contrasting texture, and Salvia nemorosa.

Expert Tip:

Place this in full sun with excellent drainage, because strong light and dry conditions produce the best fragrance and keep the plant compact. Pruning after flowering will help maintain shape and encourage a fuller plant.
