Yucca whipplei, commonly known as Our Lord’s Candle, is a dramatic, native California plant that makes a bold statement in the landscape. Found naturally on dry hillsides and chaparral slopes, it’s built to handle tough, sunny conditions with very little water. It can be seen on most hiking trails along the San Gabriel mountain ranges. 

The plant forms a dense rosette of long, narrow, blue green leaves that radiate outward in a sharp, architectural pattern. The tips are pointed, giving it a striking, almost sculptural look that works well in more natural or desert style plantings.

What really sets this yucca apart is its bloom. After several years of growth, it sends up an impressive flower spike that can reach 8 to 15 feet tall, covered in creamy white flowers. The display is dramatic and unforgettable, often becoming a focal point from a distance. After flowering, the main rosette typically dies, but it may produce offsets to continue the plant.

Yucca whipplei is especially well suited for slopes and dry banks, where its deep root system helps stabilize soil while requiring very little maintenance. It’s a great option for erosion control in low water landscapes.

It grows best in full sun and needs excellent drainage. Once established, it is extremely drought tolerant and thrives in poor, rocky soils where many other plants would struggle.

The rosette itself typically grows about 2 to 4 feet tall and wide, with the flower spike extending much higher when in bloom. It is well suited for USDA zones 7 through 10 and is hardy down to around 0 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is evergreen. 

This plant has some toxicity and may cause irritation or illness if ingested, so it is best to plant with care around pets and children.

When in bloom, the flowers can attract pollinators such as bees and other beneficial insects.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, though its sharp leaves naturally discourage browsing.

Yucca whipplei fits especially well into native, desert, and xeriscape gardens, where its bold form and low water needs can really stand out.
