Agave attenuata ‘Ray of Light’ is a softer, more refined take on the classic Foxtail Agave, prized for its bright variegation and smooth, spineless leaves. Native to central Mexico through its parent species, this selection brings a tropical, almost luminous quality to the landscape.

The broad, arching leaves are striped with creamy yellow and soft green, creating a glowing effect—especially when backlit by the sun. Unlike many agaves, the edges are smooth, making it a much more approachable option for high traffic areas or near walkways.

It forms a graceful rosette that can eventually develop a short trunk over time, giving it a slightly elevated, sculptural look. It works beautifully as a focal point, in containers, or repeated through a planting to create rhythm and brightness.

This plant does best in full sun near the coast or partial shade inland, where it’s protected from intense afternoon heat. It prefers well drained soil and benefits from occasional deep watering, but like most succulents, it should not be overwatered.

Agave ‘Ray of Light’ typically grows about 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, forming a lush, arching rosette. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is sensitive to frost, tolerating temperatures down to around 28 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is evergreen. 

This plant has some toxicity and may cause irritation or illness if ingested, so it is best to plant with care around pets and children.

Agaves generally do not attract pollinators until they flower, at which point they can support bees and other insects.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, making it a dependable option for low maintenance landscapes.
