Native to the southern United States and coastal regions, Calylophus drummondianus, commonly known as Sundrops or Beach Evening Primrose, is a tough, low growing perennial that thrives in hot, dry conditions. It’s especially valued for its bright yellow flowers and ability to perform well in sandy or challenging soils.

The blooms are one of its best features. Soft yellow, cup shaped flowers open during the day and often deepen to a warmer golden tone as they age, creating a subtle variation in color across the plant. Flowering can continue from spring well into fall, providing a long season of interest.

This plant has a spreading, slightly loose habit, making it a great option for groundcover, slopes, or areas where you want something that can handle heat and still look good. It also works nicely tucked into rock gardens or along pathways where it can spill naturally.

It does best in full sun and requires well drained soil. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant and thrives with minimal water. In fact, it tends to perform better in leaner soils and should not be overwatered.

It typically stays low, around 6 to 12 inches tall, and can spread 2 to 3 feet wide over time. It is well suited for USDA zones 7 through 10 and is hardy down to around 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is semi evergreen in mild climates. It's often seen on small residential slopes here in Southern California as a soil stabilizer.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, making it a reliable option for low maintenance landscapes.

Beach Evening Primrose fits especially well into coastal, xeriscape, and Mediterranean style gardens, where its durability and long bloom season can really shine.
