Rhus ovata, commonly known as Sugar Bush, is a hardy California native shrub known for its thick, glossy leaves and rugged, natural form. Its rounded, leathery foliage gives it a bold, substantial look that holds up well in tough conditions, making it a great fit for native and low water landscapes.

In spring, Sugar Bush produces clusters of small pink to white flowers that add a soft contrast to the deep green leaves. These blooms are followed by reddish berries that persist into summer and are attractive to birds and other wildlife. The plant brings a subtle seasonal rhythm to the garden while still maintaining a strong evergreen presence.

Rhus ovata has a naturally dense, branching structure and can be used as a large shrub, informal screen, or even trained into a small tree over time. It works especially well in naturalistic plantings, slopes, and areas where a durable, low maintenance plant is needed.

Rhus ovata typically grows 6 to 10 feet tall and wide, though it can become larger over time in ideal conditions. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and performs best in Mediterranean climates.  It is part of the Chaparral Plant Community and is hardy to about 5 deg. F after 5-6 years of establishment.

The plant is generally considered non toxic, though the berries are not commonly consumed.

The flowers attract pollinators such as bees, and the berries provide food for birds.

It is highly deer resistant and generally avoided by rabbits, making it a dependable choice for low maintenance landscapes.
